Japan is an island.  So the islanders share the same topics and language, then have relatively similar personalities compared to other countries.  Japanese character develops into group consciousness, then Japanese distinguish outsiders.  Many of Japanese people call outsiders all “Gaijin” rather than distinguish people one by one from Japanese. So Japanese have a tendency that they prefer to interact with their fellow Japanese. Group-oriented Japanese created the common value of group benefit is superior to individual benefit. Japanese tendency in multinational meetings


For foreign business people, Japanese seem to quiet or/and lack of participation in multicultural meetings. There would be several or mixed reasons; People do not have high confidence in their English and have a tendency to remain silent People speak official line and withhold their true intention or personal opinion in official meetings People wait for upper hierarchy’s opinion which would be the company’s opinion for them People feel that it is impolite to interrupt The meetings are too fast to develop his or her opinion with the reason and the conclusion

Japanese large cap companies make decisions based upon the group consensus. The Japanese decision making process is quit a long, but there are several positive outcomes; sufficient understanding of the contents of the decision with the reasons among the attended people and the related organizations fast and smooth implementation with the high understanding and commitment among attended people to the process In many cases, the written proposal are circulated among related people and the rerated organizations respecting hierarchy courses. Japanese business contract


For foreign business people, Japanese contracts are too abstract or vague in many cases. Because of relationship oriented culture, the Japanese contract is to summarize the agreement and the willingness to start the business together rather than clarifying clear responsibilities as the promises, the limitations, and the exact period.  So Japanese contract is prepared being flexible based on mutual trust to be able to renegotiate when something happened.  Going to court means the end of a relationship.  So sometime, to request detailed stipulations would create a lack of trust. Large Japanese companies have been changing, but there are still many Japanese companies are not so comfortable with a contract focusing on legal.
